The wait is over – Rihanna’s getting back onstage.
And what a stage it’ll be. The Barbadian singer is officially set to perform at the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show.
Fans have waited a long time for this moment – the halftime show will be her first performance since singing at the 2018 Grammy Awards. And though she’s done guest work on other artists’ songs, her last solo album, “Anti,” was released in early 2016.
The decision is a decided shift for Rihanna, who had previously refused to sign on to NFL events in solidarity with former San Francisco 49ers’ Colin Kaepernick. The quarterback has not played with the league in several years – ever since he knelt during the national anthem in protest of ongoing police brutality against Black people.
This news is also the latest in a string of milestones reached by Rihanna in 2022. She became a mother, giving birth to her first child with rapper ASAP Rocky in May. And, as the founder of cosmetics brand Fenty Beauty and lingerie line Savage x Fenty, she was named America’s biggest self-made billionaire by Forbes in July.
That follows her sizable musical accomplishments over the years: As an artist, Rihanna has amassed nine Grammys and 14 No. number-1 hit singles.
In an interview with Extra about her numerous successes, she admitted that the fame and accolades can be “scary,” because “the pedestal comes into play and [people will] put you up there and they keep wanting to put you up there.” Rihanna added, “I don’t want to be this icon – I want to remember who I am.”
Super Bowl LVII kicks off Feb. 12.
